Cornwall’s libraries have reported record-breaking figures as more than 8,000 young people across the Duchy took part in this year’s Summer Reading Challenge.

Record Numbers Across Cornwall

Throughout the school holidays, 35,500 children’s books were loaned out, with 5,063 youngsters completing the main challenge by reading six books or comics – Cornwall’s highest ever completion rate at 68%.

The challenge, designed for children aged four to 11, encourages reading over the summer holidays with rewards, certificates, and a mini version for under-fours. Libraries also welcomed 1,321 new members over the summer.

This year’s Story Garden theme proved particularly popular, inspiring children and families to get involved in reading and creative activities.

Praise for Cornwall’s Library Staff

Councillor Sarah Preece, cabinet member with responsibility for Libraries and Culture at Cornwall Council, said:

“I’d like to say a massive well done to all the young people who took part in this year’s summer reading challenge.
It’s fantastic to see so many children embracing the challenge and reading throughout the summer holidays.
I’d also like to say a big thank you to all of our library staff who have supported families and hosted so many fantastic free events.”

Paul Evered, Library Service Delivery Manager at Cornwall Council, added:

“The Summer months are the busiest time of year for our library staff. They did an amazing job in supporting and encouraging children to take part in the challenge and hosted some really creative activities for families throughout the summer.
It’s brilliant that so many children embraced this year’s challenge and we hope they will continue visiting their local libraries to enjoy more books and take part in events and activities.”

Cornwall’s Libraries at the Heart of the Community

Cornwall Council provides books, IT services, and online resources to all libraries across the Duchy through the Cornwall Library Service.

There are 28 libraries in Cornwall and a mobile library service. Of these, 24 libraries have been devolved to town and parish councils, a community group, and a social enterprise. Cornwall Council retains four libraries and operates the mobile service.

Library membership is free for anyone who lives, works or studies in Cornwall.
