Endangered Shark Washes Up on Par Beach: Post-Mortem Pending
Discovery on New Year’s Day
A thresher shark, classified as Endangered in European waters by the IUCN Red List, was discovered washed up on Par beach on New Year’s Day. The shark, found by a dog walker, sparked concern among conservationists and beachgoers alike.
Cornwall Wildlife Trust Responds
Volunteers from Cornwall Wildlife Trust’s Marine Strandings Network quickly attended the scene to assess the situation. Initial evaluations indicated the shark had experienced significant trauma, likely caused by line-caught sport fishing. Bycatch, the unintended capture of marine animals during fishing, continues to pose a significant threat to ocean wildlife.
Calls for Responsible Fishing
Cornwall Wildlife Trust has urged water users to adopt safe handling and release practices to help protect marine animals. Community cooperation was critical in this incident, with volunteers and locals ensuring the shark was moved safely while maintaining a secure distance for onlookers.
