Cornwall Police Officers and Members of the Public Recognised for Bravery and Dedication
Police officers, staff and members of the public from across Cornwall have been recognised for their bravery, dedication and lifesaving actions at a special awards ceremony held in St Austell.
Honouring Courage and Commitment
Over 60 officers and staff were celebrated for their exceptional work, from courageous responses to dangerous incidents to complex investigations that helped bring offenders to justice.
Among those honoured were Police Sergeant Robin Richards and Police Constable Beckie Canter, who acted without hesitation when no other emergency services were immediately available to help an extremely ill baby boy. The pair transported the baby and his mother to hospital, administering first aid on the way. Their quick actions are credited with saving the baby’s life.
Members of the Public Recognised
Four members of the public were also celebrated for their lifesaving actions, including Michelle Nicholas, who performed CPR on a man who was unconscious and not breathing. Her quick thinking and decisive action saved his life.
Tackling Offenders and Securing Justice
Police Constables Matthew Cummings and Jonny Stewart were recognised for their work tackling prolific offenders responsible for antisocial behaviour. Their dedication led to a 36-week sentence for a violent offender who had assaulted both shop staff and police officers, as well as securing a restraining order and nearly £800 in victim compensation.
Detective Inspector Sara Ward, Detective Constable Timothy Barbery, Detective Sergeant Sarah Davison and another officer were also commended for their work on an extensive investigation into sexual offences. Their skill and care throughout the investigation led to the successful conviction of a defendant sentenced to 28 years in prison.
“A Reminder of Extreme Courage and Bravery”
Chief Superintendent Scott Bradley, who presented several awards at the ceremony, said:
“Attending these awards are a reminder of the extreme courage, bravery and professionalism shown by our officers here in Cornwall.
Every day, our teams run towards danger and put themselves in dangerous situations to keep their communities safe – often, situations that many would run away from.
I am immensely proud of each and every officer and member of police staff – you are an asset to our police family. Thank you for all that you do to help protect and serve the public.
I am also deeply grateful to every member of the public who stepped forward to help save the lives of people in their community – your actions are a true reflection of strength and selflessness to help those in need.”
Celebrating the Best in Policing
The event, held on Friday 17th October, was attended by officers, staff, family members and friends, coming together to celebrate those who make policing in Cornwall something to be proud of.
Other awards were presented for acts including:
-
Displaying bravery when confronting violent offenders
-
Saving lives through swift decision making and first aid
-
Achieving successful court results that secured justice for victims
