Devon & Cornwall Police Supports National Neighbourhood Policing Week

Published On: 23 January 2024Last Updated: 23 January 2024By

Devon & Cornwall Police have announced their participation in the national neighbourhood policing week of action. Which started on Monday, 22 January, aims to showcase the vital roles played by neighbourhood teams across Devon, Cornwall, and the Isles of Scilly.

Local policing teams will engage in various activities throughout the week, primarily focusing on promoting the integral work done by neighbourhood officers, police community support officers (PCSOs), and volunteers. These efforts are directed towards protecting the public and ensuring their safety.

An important aspect of this week will be increasing the visibility of police patrols in areas identified as hotspots. Furthermore, the teams will host public meetings, offering a platform for community members to voice their concerns and discuss local priorities directly with the officers.

Assistant Chief Constable Glen Mayhew QPM emphasised the significance of community policing, stating, “Community policing sits at the core of what we do.” Acknowledging the evolution of policing in response to societal changes and crime, he reaffirmed the force’s commitment to investing in and ensuring the accessibility of neighbourhood policing. Mayhew also expressed his gratitude towards the officers, staff, and volunteers for their dedicated service, recognising neighbourhood policing as a speciality in its own right.

Alison Hernandez, the Police and Crime Commissioner for Devon, Cornwall, and the Isles of Scilly, echoed these sentiments. She highlighted the public’s desire for an approachable, friendly, yet firm police presence, contributing to the area’s status as one of the safest in the country. Hernandez also encouraged public participation in community safety, viewing the week as an ideal opportunity for engagement and collaboration.

Each policing area in Devon and Cornwall boasts a dedicated neighbourhood team that works closely with partners to address local issues effectively. This week of action presents a unique opportunity for residents to connect with these teams, understand policing priorities, and contribute to building safer, more resilient communities.

Residents are encouraged to visit the Devon & Cornwall Police website to find their local officer, learn about upcoming events and meetings, and read about policing priorities specific to their area.
