Police Increase Road Patrols in Cornwall to Tackle Dangerous Driving and Crime

Increased patrols target dangerous driving and criminality as visitor numbers rise

As the summer holidays get underway, police in Cornwall have stepped up their efforts to tackle dangerous driving and criminal behaviour on the roads. With thousands of extra vehicles arriving in the county, officers are using both high-visibility patrols and undercover tactics to keep people safe.

Specialist roads policing teams are focusing on key routes across Cornwall, aiming to deter reckless drivers and intercept vehicles linked to crime, including drug supply.

Recent crackdown results in multiple arrests

During two recent days of action, officers made four arrests for suspected drug driving, seized two vehicles, and caught:

  • Two people using mobile phones behind the wheel

  • Two drivers without seatbelts

  • Two vehicles with no MOT

  • Three people without insurance

  • One driver who failed an eye sight test, resulting in a surrendered licence

Those caught have been reported, with penalties such as fines and points on licences expected to follow.

Police message: We’re watching — even if you don’t see us

Operations Commander Jim Gale said:
“Keeping the roads safe remains our focus. These operations are hugely important for us to make sure we’re doing our part in keeping people safe on the road.
Our priority is to deter dangerous behaviour, educate drivers, and identify those breaking the law in an effort to create positive, safe, sustainable change.”

Inspector Tony Hannaford, who leads roads policing in West Cornwall, had a clear message for offenders:
“We’ll be on the roads looking out for you, whether you know we’re there or not, to put a stop to your dangerous behaviour.
This action isn’t a one-off. Our officers are on the roads 24 hours a day, seven days a week and will continue to be throughout the year.”

Visitors reminded to plan ahead and drive safely

Insp Hannaford also addressed the wider public, especially holidaymakers:
“We look forward to welcoming lots of visitors to our towns. Don’t forget, if you’re driving, please pre-plan your journeys, take breaks and drive safely and considerately.”

The campaign targets what police refer to as the ‘Fatal Five’ — the most common causes of serious collisions:

  • Drink or drug driving

  • Not wearing a seatbelt

  • Distractions such as mobile phones

  • Health and fitness to drive

  • Speeding

Offences can lead to fines, licence points, court appearances, and even imprisonment in serious cases.
