Police Operation Targets Drug Use in Launceston and Callington Pubs
Officers Visit Nine Venues Across Launceston and Callington
Police have carried out a night time operation in pubs across Launceston and Callington to deter drug use ahead of the festive season. Officers were joined by passive drugs dog Skye as part of Operation Pubs Against Drugs, with the aim of discouraging people from using, carrying or supplying illegal substances.
A total of nine pubs across both town centres were visited on Friday 21st November. Officers worked with staff at each venue while Skye helped detect the presence of illegal drugs.
Inspector Greg Hodgkiss said the operation delivered a clear message.
“This operation sends a clear message that drug use is not and will not be tolerated in the county. This activity was an important step in us being able to disrupt and deter potential drug related offending.”
Spot checks lead to other concerns
During the patrols, officers also found two underage drinkers and stopped a person who was driving illegally on a provisional licence.
PCSO Anna Harrison, who planned the operation, said engaging with people directly was an important part of the work.
“Being visible in the evenings provides us with a great opportunity to chat directly with partygoers to reinforce key safety messages while also working with businesses to keep night life safe for everyone. It also shows both the public and potential criminals that we are taking drug crime seriously, especially as we head into the busy festive season.”
Greg added that the team will continue to work closely with venues and communities.
“We’ll continue to work with local businesses, licenced premises, communities, and partner agencies to tackle drug use and supply. If you have any information about illegal drugs in your area, please report it to us. We’re listening and taking action.”
Penalties and how to report
Penalties for supplying, taking or carrying illegal drugs range from up to two years in prison for possession of Class C drugs, up to life in prison and an unlimited fine for supplying or producing Class A drugs.
