Pencarrow Returns: Explore the House with Hidden Passages from 7th April
Pencarrow House and Gardens near Bodmin is preparing to open its doors once again from Sunday 7th April, welcoming visitors to explore a historic family home full of character, hidden history, and unexpected delights.
A Family Home with a Difference
Privately owned by the Molesworth-St Aubyn family for nearly 500 years, Pencarrow is not part of the National Trust. Described as both “quirky” and “a hidden gem”, the Georgian house stands on the edge of Bodmin Moor, surrounded by 50 acres of gardens and woodland.
What makes it different? According to Pencarrow House & Gardens, “Pencarrow isn’t your average historic house”. With “portraits with eyes that follow you”, “statues sporting top hats” and “hidden passageways”, it’s an experience that goes beyond the usual country home tour.
Guided Tours and Pet-Friendly Grounds
Inside the house, visitors are taken on a guided journey through the building’s rich past. The tours are led by experienced guides who share the secrets of this ancient home.
Outside, the gardens offer something for everyone, from a Grade II listed garden to an Iron Age fort, children’s play area, and scenic walks. Dogs are welcome, making it an ideal spot for a family day out.
“Pets are welcome, and with 50 acres to explore there really is something for everyone.”
Opening Times and What’s On Offer
The gardens are currently open daily from 10am to 5pm. Visitors arriving before 7th April are asked to bring cash for the honesty box in the car park, as the shop isn’t yet open.
From 7th April, the house, café and shop will also reopen. The café – known as the Peacock Café – serves light lunches, homemade cakes (including gluten-free options), and traditional Cornish cream teas. The café and children’s play area, which includes a Wendy house with a slate roof, are free to access without purchasing a ticket.
You can find out more about opening times and pricing on their official website: www.pencarrow.co.uk
Pencarrow will be open every day except Saturdays until 31st October.
Whether you’re drawn in by tales of hidden passages, searching for a family day out in Cornwall, or just in need of a good cream tea, Pencarrow’s mix of history and charm might be just the thing.
