Five Lesser-Known Walking Routes to Explore in Cornwall

Published On: 8 August 2025Last Updated: 8 August 2025By

As Cornwall experiences a surge in summer visitors, a list of lesser-known walking routes has been shared to help people escape the busy hotspots like Newquay, St Ives and Padstow, where traffic congestion has become a growing concern.

Visit Cornwall recently confirmed a rise in day visitors for summer 2025, marking a strong rebound for the local tourism economy. But with the increase in footfall, popular beaches and trails are more crowded than ever.

To help ease the pressure and offer a quieter alternative, Cornwall-based static caravan provider Away Resorts has shared five of the most underrated walking routes in the county. From old mine trails to peaceful coves, the selection takes in both industrial heritage and stunning sea views.

Kate Watts, spokesperson for Away Resorts, said:
“With a rise in the popularity of staycations, popular beauty spots across the UK can become especially busy in recent years. It’s important to go off the beaten path to find a bit of peace and quiet, avoid the traffic and reduce impact to the local ecology. With hundreds of secluded spots to pick from across Cornwall, you’ll always be able to find true wilderness.”

Here are the five walks they’ve picked out.

1. Levant, Botallack and the Crowns Trail

Walk time: 1.5 to 2 hours
Postcode for parking: TR19 7DW (Pendeen Car Park)

This route follows the South West Coast Path past iconic mine chimneys and the historic Botallack Count House. It also includes views of the Levant Beam Engine and stretches across open fields.

2. Godrevy Head

Walk distance: 0.6 miles
Postcode for parking: TR27 5ED (National Trust)

Ideal for a short, scenic stroll, this walk offers panoramic views across St Ives Bay and the Godrevy Lighthouse. The headland is also known for its grey seal sightings, making it perfect for wildlife watchers.

3. Vault Beach

Walk distance: Up to 4.9 miles circular
Parking: Gorran Haven or Lamledra

Starting from Gorran Haven or Lamledra car park, this walk winds past Dodman Point and nearby beaches like Hemmick and Mevagissey. It’s a longer, quieter route that combines coast and countryside.

4. Penberth Cove

Walk distance: 3 to 7.6 miles
Postcode for parking: TR19 6HJ

A remote fishing cove tucked east of Porthcurno, Penberth is peaceful and usually uncrowded. Walkers can take a shorter route to Porthcurno or a more challenging loop to St Buryan. While it’s a great place for a swim, visitors should be cautious as there’s no lifeguard cover.

5. The Great Flat Lode Trail

Walk distance: 7.5 miles
Postcode for parking: TR16 6JX (South Wheal Frances car park)

This route follows part of the old Basset Mine Tramway and takes walkers through Cornwall’s mining past. With views of South Crofty and other mining relics, it’s ideal for those interested in local history. It’s classed as a challenging walk, so good footwear is recommended.

With summer in full swing, these quieter spots offer an alternative to Cornwall’s headline attractions. Whether it’s mining heritage or wild headlands, there’s something here for walkers seeking a more peaceful experience this season.
