Advice from RSPCA Cornwall on Keeping Dogs Safe in Summer Heat
RSPCA urges caution as temperatures soar across Cornwall
Dog owners are being urged to think twice before heading out for a walk in the sun, as RSPCA Cornwall Branch warns that hot pavements and rising temperatures can be deadly for pets.
Pavements Hotter Than You Think
What feels like a warm, pleasant day to us can be extremely dangerous for dogs. Pavements in the midday sun can reach temperatures of over 60°C, hot enough to burn a dog’s sensitive paw pads within seconds.
“It’s not just uncomfortable, it’s dangerous,” the RSPCA warns.
Some Breeds at Higher Risk
Dogs are not able to cool themselves like humans do. They mainly regulate body temperature through panting, which is far less effective in extreme heat. This puts certain dogs at greater risk, especially breeds with short noses such as Pugs, Bulldogs and French Bulldogs. These dogs have compromised breathing and are far more likely to suffer from heat exhaustion or fatal heatstroke.
Signs of heatstroke include:
-
Excessive panting
-
Drooling
-
Weakness
-
Vomiting
-
Collapse
-
Seizures
If you notice any of these signs, the advice is clear: seek immediate veterinary help.
Stay Safe This Summer
To protect dogs during hot weather, RSPCA Cornwall Branch is urging pet owners to follow these precautions:
-
Avoid walks during the hottest parts of the day. Stick to early mornings or later evenings when it’s cooler.
-
Ensure your dog has access to shade and fresh water throughout the day.
-
Never leave a dog alone in a parked car, where temperatures can become deadly within minutes.
-
Keep a close eye on dogs that are older, overweight or have breathing issues.
The message is simple: “When in doubt, don’t go out.”
Your dog’s wellbeing depends on it.
