Watch Out: Adder Sightings and Safety Tips for Pet Owners!
As Cornwall welcomes warmer weather, so too does it see the re-emergence of its only venomous snake—the adder.
Kernow Veterinary Group has issued a warning about the potential danger these snakes pose to both humans and pets during this time of year.
Adders Awake
With spring in full bloom, adders are now coming out of hibernation. These reptiles can often be spotted basking in the sun or hidden in the grass, making accidental encounters more likely. Although adders are generally non-aggressive and only bite in self-defence, usually when stepped on, the risk of bites increases with more people and their pets enjoying outdoor activities.
Legal Protection for Adders
It’s important for the public to remember that adders are protected under UK law. It is illegal to intentionally harm or kill these wild snakes, emphasising the need for awareness and caution rather than harm.
Recognising and Reacting to Bites
Adder bites are most commonly inflicted on the legs or face, identifiable by dark, painful swellings and typically marked by two small puncture wounds at the swelling’s centre. The severity of these bites can vary, but they all require immediate attention.
Safety First for Pets
Dogs are particularly at risk of adder bites, often out of curiosity or accidentally disturbing a snake’s resting place. Kernow Veterinary Group advises pet owners to be vigilant and take swift action if their pet is bitten. Carrying your dog rather than allowing it to walk can help reduce the spread of venom, and seeking immediate veterinary assistance is crucial.
Stay Safe and Informed
As summer approaches and more families venture outdoors, being informed about the potential risks and how to handle them can ensure a safe environment for everyone. For more detailed information on how to handle adder bites, particularly in dogs, visit Kernow Veterinary Group’s emergency advice page or the dedicated article on myfamilyvets.co.uk.
Stay alert, protect your pets, and enjoy the great outdoors safely this season!
