The Eden Project’s Outdoor Gardens in Cornwall are currently showcasing a breathtaking explosion of colour and fragrance, thanks to the UK’s warmest and wettest spring in decades. A Season Like No Other
According to Met Office data, the UK has experienced its warmest spring since records began in 1884 and its wettest since 1986. These conditions have had a remarkable impact on the Eden Project’s Outdoor Gardens, which span 30 acres and house more than 3,000 varieties of plants. Visitors are greeted with a kaleidoscope of colour, from the lavender fields to the South African veld, all flourishing under these unusual weather patterns.
One of the highlights this summer is the striking lavender display near the Eden Project’s stage. Typically, these flowers would have finished blooming by now, but the warm, wet spring has delayed their cycle, providing summer visitors with an extraordinary opportunity to enjoy the lush purple hues and the buzzing activity of bees and other pollinators.

Exotic Blooms and Unusual Displays
The South African veld and North American Prairie areas are also benefiting from the favourable conditions, with early colour that will intensify as the summer progresses. The Eden Project’s horticulture team is taking advantage of the warmer weather to trial plants typically not found outdoors in the UK, including varieties of protea and agave, which are thriving in this year’s climate.
In addition to these areas, the wet spring has significantly enhanced the Eden Project’s carnivorous bed near the Core building. This open-air collection, one of the largest in the UK, now boasts more flowers than ever before, with the colourful pitcher plants standing out as a particular draw for visitors.
For those seeking a moment of tranquillity amidst the vibrant displays, the plane tree steps in the heart of the gardens offer a cool, shaded retreat. Here, the Japanese anemone, which has flourished in the cooler microclimate, provides a serene spot to enjoy the surroundings.

Climate Concerns Amid the Beauty
While the Eden Project’s gardens are a visual feast this summer, the unusual weather patterns are also a reminder of the broader climate issues at play. Global temperatures reached record highs in July, and a recent report by the Royal Meteorological Society highlights that the UK is experiencing more frequent weather extremes, including increased rainfall and prolonged hot spells.
Julie Kendall, the Eden Project’s Horticulture Manager for the Outdoor Gardens, expressed a mix of delight and concern over the gardens’ current state. “It is wonderful to see our Outdoor Gardens flourishing this summer but, as gardeners, concerns about the climate are never far from our minds,” Julie said. She noted that while the wet spring has boosted certain displays, it has also posed challenges, such as unpredictable sowing times and a rise in pests like slugs.

Looking Ahead
As the climate continues to change, the Eden Project remains committed to adapting and finding ways to support plant life under these new conditions. Julie and her team are focused on demonstrating positive actions to stabilise the climate while ensuring the gardens continue to be a place of beauty and education.
