Canary Wharf Group (CWG) has officially launched Eden Dock, an innovative urban green space developed in collaboration with the Eden Project. The project aims to promote biodiversity and provide a new way for people to experience nature in the heart of London.
Green Spaces and Floating Forests
Eden Dock is set to transform Canary Wharf with floating forests, aquatic habitats, and new spaces that bring people closer to nature. Designed to enhance biodiversity, the area now includes environments that attract a range of wildlife, from wading birds and waterfowl to eels and rare plant species. The dock is also home to new public areas, including boardwalks and gardens, offering visitors a peaceful retreat within the city.
With the world’s urban population expected to grow to 70% by 2050, the need for green spaces like Eden Dock has never been more important. Cities face significant challenges in balancing expansion with environmental protection, and Eden Dock presents a blueprint for addressing biodiversity loss in urban areas.
A Boost for Creativity and Wellbeing
Research accompanying the launch highlights the benefits of green and blue spaces on wellbeing and productivity. Nearly three-quarters (73%) of office workers expressed a preference for working near water and green spaces, and 69% reported that spending time in these environments sparked creativity. Additionally, 65% of people said they felt more relaxed after engaging with nature.
Shobi Khan, CEO of Canary Wharf Group, emphasised the importance of sustainability in the company’s operations, stating that CWG has purchased 100% renewable energy since 2012 and contributed zero waste to landfill since 2009. Shobi also highlighted Eden Dock as a “best-in-practice global example” of how cities can support biodiversity while fostering a resilient environment for people to thrive.

Living Artwork at Eden Dock
Marking the occasion, a unique living artwork titled Nature Rising has been installed. Over 20 figures, crafted from the ligustrum shrub, are scattered throughout the dock, symbolising the harmony between people and nature. These living sculptures will remain a permanent fixture in Canary Wharf’s public art collection.
Sir Tim Smit, Co-Founder of the Eden Project, praised the collaboration, noting that the varied landscapes and habitats created at Eden Dock would support a greater diversity of life than much of the countryside. Sir Tim also pointed out that the focus on beauty and natural spaces would positively impact the happiness and sense of belonging for those who live, work, and visit the area.
The Future of Urban Biodiversity
Eden Dock represents a significant step forward in tackling the environmental challenges facing urban areas. As cities continue to grow, projects like this demonstrate how innovative urban planning can enhance both the natural environment and the quality of life for city dwellers.
