Teen Skating Star Takes First Glide on Eden Project’s Ice Rink
Aísling Lessiter Opens Cornwall’s Winter Ice Season
Young British ice-skating hopeful Aísling Lessiter was among the first to take to the Eden Project’s sparkling ice rink, which has returned just in time for the October half term and festive season.
Aísling, who is 15 and from Devon, began skating at the age of eight and has already achieved multiple national level qualifications. She now ranks among the top young competitive ice-skaters in Britain.
Rising Through the Ranks
Training under head coach Shelly Clarke, with support from Steve Vincent and Grant Howie, Aísling has also worked with several international figures in the sport. These include nine-time Belgian Champion and Olympian Kevin van der Perren, Canadian Olympic choreographer Joey Russell, two-time Olympic silver medallist and World Champion Brian Orser, and international choreographer Benoit Richaud.
Her achievements include gold at the British Ice Skating Young Stars and recent wins at national competitions in Guildford and Sheffield. This year she advanced to Level 6 Advanced Novice, leaving her just two grades away from the highest competitive level.
Looking ahead, Aísling will compete at Skate London this November before entering a series of competitions between January and June. Her goal is to qualify for the British Championships in November 2026, with hopes of progressing to ISU Grand Prix events and ultimately the 2030 Winter Olympics.
Inspiring Others at Eden
The Eden Project invited Aísling to test its rink and inspire others to take part in the sport. Speaking about her experience, she said:
“It was amazing to skate at Eden. I’ve trained and performed on a lot of rinks, but this one feels really special. This was one of the most memorable and exciting projects I have been part of. I hope it inspires people to take part in skating – it’s such an enjoyable way to stay active and challenge yourself.”
Ice Skating Returns to Cornwall
Eden’s ice rink remains open throughout the winter, including February half term, offering people in Cornwall and across the South West the chance to try ice skating when few other venues are available. Lessons, family sessions and toddler play sessions can be booked to help beginners and build confidence for all ages.
Simon Townsend, Eden Project general manager, said:
“It was wonderful to invite a rising star like Aísling to be one of the first to skate on our rink this season. Her dedication is inspiring, and we can’t wait to see what her future holds. Our ice rink is a place where people can come together, have fun, and try something new – all as part of an enriching day out.”
A Festive Season Ahead at Eden
In the coming weeks, the Eden Project will be transformed into a botanical winter wonderland with its most impressive Christmas light display to date. The Biomes will resemble giant glowing baubles, while Father Christmas and his Elves will return for Eden’s largest immersive festive experience yet.
The Cornwall Christmas Fair also returns on 19th and 20th November, featuring more than 60 stalls from independent makers. Funds raised will support local charities through the Cornwall Community Foundation, following last year’s total of nearly £70,000.
Plan Your Visit
The ice rink is open now and runs until 22nd February. The late opening Christmas experience runs on select dates between 18th November and 4th January (closed Christmas Day).
Adults from £38, children from £12, under-fives free. Universal and Pension Credit holders £10. Cornwall and Devon residents can save up to 35% with a year-round Locals’ Pass.
