You Won’t Believe What’s Blooming at The Eden Project This Spring
Record-breaking weather triggers explosion of colour across Biomes and gardens
The Eden Project is currently bursting into life with a spectacular array of blooms and displays, thanks in part to recent record-breaking weather conditions that have helped kick-start one of the most vibrant springs on record.
According to the Met Office, March 2025 was the sunniest since records began in 1910, offering a long stretch of warm, sunny days paired with cool nights. That was quickly followed by heavy rainfall in April — a combination that has given Eden’s expert horticultural team the perfect conditions to deliver a site-wide botanical showcase.
Mediterranean Biome: A Feast for the Senses
Visitors stepping into the Mediterranean Biome are being greeted by a rich poppy display, with bright Icelandic varieties in yellow, orange, red and white currently in full bloom. Soon, these will be joined by Common poppies, adding striking reds to an already vivid landscape.
Another standout feature is the sea of Anemones, creating a blanket of lilac and purple. ‘Amazing grey’ poppies are beginning to emerge through the Anemones, adding even more colour to one of Eden’s most photogenic spots.
Nearby, the Atlantic Islands exhibit is glowing in hues of yellow and blue, thanks to Aeonium and Echium plants, offering a glimpse into the diversity of flora on those islands and highlighting the threats they face due to climate change.
Also drawing attention is the dragon lily — Dracunculus vulgaris — which is getting ready to flower. Known for its deep purple spathe and unsettling scent of rotting flesh, it attracts flies and beetles much like its relative, the Titan arum.
Outdoor Gardens: Colour Bursting at Every Corner
Eden’s Outdoor Gardens are thriving, especially in the Japanese garden tucked behind the Core building. The space is now filled with seasonal colour, particularly from Japanese maple trees and blooming azaleas.
A wall of blue camas, the soft pinks and whites of blossoming Apple and Cherry trees, and carpets of flowering Primulas are transforming the outdoor landscape into a riot of spring colour.
Rainforest Biome: Chocolate, Colour and Cat’s Tails
Within the Rainforest Biome, the tropical landscape is springing out of its winter dormancy. One popular stop for visitors is the cacao exhibit, where a variety of cacao pods — the source of chocolate — are currently on show. Eagle-eyed guests can also spot the tree’s small flowers, which grow directly on its trunk and branches.
The Biome is home to bursts of colour too, with the purple trumpet-shaped flowers of the Bush clock vine and the brilliant red catkins of Acalypha hispida, also known as red-hot cat’s tail. There’s also the Mysore clock vine, which features hanging clusters of orange and yellow flowers.
Curated Beauty and Family Fun
Catherine Cutler, the Eden Project’s head of horticulture, said:
“Spring is a particularly special time to visit the Eden Project, with every corner of the site full of rich colours and amazing scents. The horticulture team have been working incredibly hard to curate displays that not only look wonderful but most importantly help educate us all about the extraordinary diversity of plant life.
“I’m sure many of us enjoyed the incredible sunshine in March, and so did our gardens at Eden. The record-breaking month followed by the quick switch to a very wet April really assisted a lot of our plant growth and we are now seeing the rewards from that.
“The next few weeks are a particularly lovely time for our local visitors to come and see us, with new plants coming into flower on a daily basis, so they will really be able to watch on as these exhibits evolve further.”
