Cornwall Beaches Rank Among UK’s Cleanest Waters – See Which Topped the List!
As Britain braces for a warm summer, swimmers and holiday-makers are in for a treat.
A recent study by Clear It Waste has revealed the cleanest beaches in the UK, ideal for those planning to dive into the coming heatwave. Over 400 beaches were scrutinised for their water quality from 2018 to 2024, focusing on cleanliness indicators like sewage suspension and bacteria counts, including Intestinal Enterococci and Escherichia coli.
Exceptional Cleanliness Across the UK
The findings are promising for water enthusiasts: over 300 UK beaches scored nine or above on a cleanliness scale of ten. Fistral Beach in Cornwall topped the charts with an impressive score of 9.99/10, standing out as the prime location for swimmers. Renowned for its pristine conditions, Fistral South has maintained an “excellent” status for four consecutive years and frequently hosts major international surfing events.
Cornwall: A Haven for Beachgoers
Cornwall proves yet again to be a hotspot for beach lovers, with 11 of its beaches scoring a near-perfect 9.98/10. These beaches are celebrated not just for their cleanliness but also for their vibrant holiday atmosphere and suitability for water sports.
Other Top Beaches Across the Country
The study also highlighted other gems across the UK. Christchurch Bay in New Forest, awarded three stars by the Environment Agency, offers beautiful coastal walks and views of the Isle of Wight. Close by, Milford-on-Sea appeals to divers with its high-quality water, though swimmers are advised to take caution due to the absence of lifeguards.
In South Hams, Slapton Sands Torcross is noted for its calm waters and unique ecology, backing onto a large freshwater lake. Seahouses North beach in Northumberland, with its excellent water quality, is a paradise for birdwatchers and sea anglers, offering views of the distant Farne Island.
Meadfoot’s beach in Torbay, dubbed the English Riviera, is a draw for holidaymakers with its clean waters and proximity to cultural hotspots like Agatha Christie’s former home. Lastly, Shell Bay North offers a tranquil setting perfect for swimming or simply watching the maritime traffic, including the passage of Condor Ferries.
A Summer of Clean Swimming Awaits
With over 300 beaches rated highly for their water quality, UK residents and tourists alike have a plethora of choices for summer swimming. This report comes as a breath of fresh air, especially considering the recent concerns over sewage spillages affecting Britain’s beaches. As the mercury rises, these sparkling clean beaches are ready to welcome waves of visitors looking for the perfect splash!
