Penzance Community Unites for a Cleaner Coast: New Year Beach Clean-Up a Resounding Success

In a heartwarming display of community spirit and environmental stewardship, over fifty individuals gathered for a New Year Walk and Beach Clean, organised by Plastic Free Penzance in collaboration with Mounts Bay Marine Group.

The event, held under a crisp winter sky, saw a diverse group of participants, including families, environmental enthusiasts, and new supporters, all united by a common goal: to rid the shores of Penzance of harmful litter and ghost gear (abandoned fishing equipment).

Equipped with gloves and rubbish bags, the group meticulously combed the beach, collecting everything from plastic wrappers to rusty cans. Their efforts resulted in an impressive haul: two full sacks of ghost gear and another of mixed recyclables, which were responsibly disposed of at Odyssey Innovation Ltd’s recycling point.

This initiative is part of the broader #MillionMileClean campaign spearheaded by Surfers Against Sewage, a nationwide movement aiming to tackle plastic pollution across the UK’s coastlines and waterways. The data and evidence collected during this clean-up will contribute valuable insights to the campaign, helping to shape future environmental policies and actions.

The organisers expressed heartfelt gratitude to all participants for their hard work and commitment. “It was lovely to meet everyone, both new friends and old,” said Plastic Free Penzance. “You’re all brilliant”

The enthusiasm and positive impact of this event have already sparked excitement for the next scheduled clean-up on February 10th. Interested individuals are encouraged to stay informed and sign up for future beach cleans through the group’s newsletter.

This successful clean-up not only highlights the growing concern and proactive stance against plastic pollution but also showcases the power of community action in effecting real environmental change.
