Carrie’s War: A Journey of Courage and Discovery Premieres This Easter at The Minack Theatre
In anticipation of Easter, The Minack Theatre is set to open its doors to a heartwarming theatrical adaptation of Nina Bawden’s beloved novel, “Carrie’s War.” The play, adapted by Emma Reeves, promises to deliver a captivating narrative of childhood resilience, adventure, and the profound journey of self-discovery set against the backdrop of wartime Wales. Running from March 29 to April 12, 2024, this family-friendly production is recommended for audiences aged 8 and above.
“Carrie’s War” follows the story of 12-year-old Carrie and her younger brother, who are evacuated from London to the rural expanse of Wales due to the war. Thrust into a new life under the strict and demanding Mr. Evans, Carrie and her brother navigate the complexities of their new world. They find solace and companionship in Albert Sandwich, a unique friend, and the enigmatic inhabitants of Druid’s Bottom, including Hepzibah, a kind-hearted witch, Mrs. Gotobed, and Mr. Jonny.
The narrative deepens as Hepzibah shares the legend of an ancient skull and a curse, unveiling themes of mystery, magic, and the consequences of secrets kept. Years later, a grown Carrie, accompanied by her children, returns to Druid’s Bottom, confronting a haunting secret from her past that she has never revealed.
This adaptation not only brings to life the struggles and joys of growing up during wartime but also highlights Nina Bawden’s personal experiences of evacuation, weaving a tale that is both historical and heart-touching. Emma Reeves’s adaptation captures the essence of Bawden’s award-winning novel, making “Carrie’s War” an engaging experience for both children and adults.
As Easter approaches, The Minack Theatre is proud to present “Carrie’s War,” inviting families to embark on a journey of courage, friendship, and the power of storytelling. This production is a perfect opportunity for young audiences and their families to engage with a story of enduring relevance, reflecting on the impact of war and the resilience of the human spirit.
