As the festive season approaches, The Story of Emily, near Liskeard, offers a chance to immerse yourself in the magic of a Victorian Cornish Christmas. Hosted at the beautifully restored Victorian Rectory, the childhood home of Cornish heroine Emily Hobhouse, this unique celebration promises a memorable experience steeped in history and tradition.
Victorian Festive Weekend
On 14th and 15th December 2024, the Victorian Rectory will come alive with traditional Christmas decorations, glowing candlelight, and the evocative scents of pine and spices. Visitors can enjoy a packed schedule of activities for all ages.
Children will love dressing up in Victorian clothing, decorating cookies, and penning letters to Lowen, the mischievous Cornish piskie. Adults can embrace the season by crafting a Cornish Kissing Bunch, enjoying classical readings and carols, and warming up with festive treats by the courtyard firepits.

The War Rooms Experience
Just a short stroll from the Victorian Rectory is the War Rooms. This immersive 1 hour, 45-minute storytelling tour offers an in-depth look at Emily Hobhouse’s remarkable efforts to save lives during the Anglo-Boer War, alongside a wider exploration of the war’s history.
A Taste of History
Visitors can round off their day at The Story of Emily restaurant. This elegant, light-filled venue serves traditional 19th-century South African dishes, prepared using produce from the on-site kitchen garden.
