Stress-Free Christmas: Expert Tips for Decorating Your Home in Cornwall

Published On: 29 November 2024Last Updated: 29 November 2024By

Decorating your home for Christmas can be a daunting task, with a recent survey revealing that 46% of Brits find the process stressful. To help ease the pressure, David Wilson Homes, which is currently building homes in Cornwall, has teamed up with Christmas decorating experts Rachel Bent and Alix Riding to share practical advice for a beautifully festive home.

Planning Makes Perfect

Rachel, Head of Visual Merchandising and Christmas at Bents Garden & Home, suggests starting early to make the most of the festive season. She said:

“December 1 is the most popular day to put up a Christmas tree, so now’s the perfect time to start planning your festive décor. Preparing early means you can avoid last-minute shopping trips and instead enjoy the creative process.”

Alix, an interior designer at Show Business Interiors, recommends ensuring decorations and lights are in good condition before starting. “Test your fairy lights and check you have everything you need, including plenty of wire for hanging ornaments,” she advised.

Focus on Key Spaces

Instead of trying to decorate every room, Rachel suggests prioritising key areas like the living and dining rooms. She also advises adding small festive touches to other spaces, such as guest rooms or powder rooms, for a cosy and inviting feel.

“Pace yourself,” Rachel added. “Take a staggered approach – tackle the tree one day, wreaths and garlands another. Involve your family, especially children, and turn it into a fun activity to create cherished memories.”

Tips for a Show-Stopping Christmas Tree

With over 30 years of experience in tree decorating, Rachel shared her top tips for creating a stunning centrepiece:

  • Make it sparkle: Ensure all lights are working and weave them evenly through the branches.
  • Create a diagonal flow: Arrange ribbons, flowers, or foliage diagonally for a natural look.
  • Cluster your baubles: Group baubles in clusters of three using wire for added visual impact and security.
  • Make it personal: Incorporate family heirlooms or handmade ornaments to tell your unique story.
  • Add a tree skirt: Use a stylish skirt to hide the tree base and elevate your décor.

Alix also recommends giving yourself plenty of time for tree decorating, turning it into a festive occasion with music, movies, or a glass of something seasonal.
