Could Your Halloween Costume Be a Fire Hazard? Safety Experts Warn of Hidden Dangers

Published On: 16 October 2025Last Updated: 16 October 2025By

As Halloween grows in popularity across the UK, safety experts are warning families to stay alert to potential hazards lurking behind the spooky fun.

With a recent YouGov survey showing that more than two in five Brits (41%) say Halloween is important to them or their family, this year is set to be one of the busiest yet. But according to Safety Group, families should make sure safety isn’t forgotten among the festivities.

Tom Richmond, Operations Director for Safety Group, said: “Halloween has become as significant as Christmas in terms of decorations and celebrations. While we want everyone to enjoy this spooky time of year, it’s important to be aware of the increased risks that come with costumes, decorations, and festivities.”

Five Tips for a Safe Halloween

1. Choose Fire-Safe Costumes
When buying costumes, families are urged to check for UKCA or CE marks and fire warning labels to ensure they meet UK fire safety standards. While costumes sold by major retailers like Asda and Tesco comply with UK regulations, those from online marketplaces such as eBay or Amazon may not.

2. Buy Electrical Decorations from Reputable Retailers
Spooky lighting and projectors should only be purchased from trusted UK retailers that comply with EU or UK electrical safety standards. Safety Group also warns about the risk of trip hazards caused by cables in poorly lit spaces.

3. Stay Visible While Trick-or-Treating
Children are advised to wear reflective costumes and carry torches to stay visible to drivers. Trick-or-treating should be limited to homes of people you know, as not everyone takes part in Halloween celebrations. Drivers are also reminded to slow down and watch carefully for children crossing roads.

4. Carve Pumpkins Safely
Families should use pumpkin carving kits instead of kitchen knives and opt for LED tea lights rather than real candles to reduce fire risks.

5. Protect Your Pets
Halloween celebrations can unsettle pets, particularly with fireworks and increased activity around Bonfire Night. Noise protection for dogs, secure decorations, and keeping treats out of reach can help avoid unnecessary distress or emergency vet visits.

Safety Group’s advice comes as excitement builds for Halloween 2025, ensuring families can enjoy the spooky season safely and responsibly.
