Kehelland Trust Hosts Winter Pruning Workshop for Apple Tree Enthusiasts

Published On: 31 January 2024Last Updated: 31 January 2024By

Kehelland Trust is inviting the community to a hands-on winter pruning workshop, focusing on apple trees and orchards. The event, scheduled for Sunday, 4th February, promises to be an enriching experience for those interested in orchard maintenance and horticulture.

The workshop will be led by skilled orchardist Michelle Lawson from Resilient Orchards Cornwall. Michelle will provide practical guidance on the pruning process, using the trees at Kehelland as examples. Participants will have the unique opportunity to learn and apply techniques that enhance the health and productivity of apple trees, while also benefiting nature.

In addition to the practical session, the workshop will include a segment dedicated to addressing the specific needs of participants’ own apple trees. Attendees are encouraged to bring photos of their trees to facilitate personalised advice.

Sally Pyner, Horticulture & Projects Manager at Kehelland Trust, will also be present to support the workshop and answer questions. Her expertise in planning orchards with Cornish Apple Varieties in Cornwall will provide additional insights for attendees looking to cultivate local varieties.

The Trust assures that all necessary tools and guidance will be provided, although participants are welcome to bring their own tools if preferred. Refreshments will be available, and attendees are asked to inform the organisers of any dietary requirements.

An exciting aspect of the workshop is the opportunity to purchase bare-root apple trees directly from the ground. Described as an ‘orchard in a bag’, these trees will be available for sale during and after the workshop, so attendees are encouraged to bring cash if they wish to acquire their own.

Advance booking for the workshop is required, and interested individuals can register via the Trust’s online hub on their website.

This event represents a unique opportunity for apple tree enthusiasts and those interested in orchard management to gain practical skills and knowledge from experienced professionals in a hands-on setting. Kehelland Trust looks forward to welcoming participants to this educational and engaging workshop.
