Launch of The Great Cornish Hedges Survey: A Call to the Community
In a collaborative effort to celebrate and preserve the unique hedging styles of Cornwall, the Cornwall & Isles of Scilly Historic Environment Record has partnered with the Cornwall Rural Education & Skills Trust (CREST) to launch an ambitious project: The Great Cornish Hedges Survey. This initiative seeks to map the diversity of hedges throughout Kernow, highlighting the region’s rich ecological and cultural heritage.
Cornwall, known for its picturesque landscapes and biodiversity, boasts a variety of hedging styles that are not only essential for the ecosystem but also represent centuries of agricultural history. The Cornwall & Isles of Scilly Historic Environment Record expresses a deep appreciation for these hedges, stating they are (probably definitely) the best in the world. However, they acknowledge the complexity and diversity of Cornish hedges, underscoring the need for a comprehensive survey.
CREST has requested assistance in this endeavour, aiming to construct a detailed map showcasing the different types of hedges found across Cornwall. This map will serve multiple purposes, including guiding where specific hedge types should be built and facilitating targeted training programs. By understanding the distribution and characteristics of hedges, CREST can tailor their educational efforts to ensure that the right type of hedge is built in the right place, enhancing both the landscape’s beauty and its ecological function.
The project calls on the community to participate actively by submitting photographs of hedges, along with information about their location and any notable features. This grassroots approach not only engages the public in environmental stewardship but also enriches the survey with a wide range of data.
Interested individuals can find more information and submit their hedge observations through the project’s dedicated page on the Cornwall government’s website. This initiative represents a significant step towards preserving Cornwall’s hedgerows, ensuring they continue to thrive for generations to come.
