Vindication Swim: Celebrating the Legacy of Mercedes Gleitze in Cinemas Across Cornwall
In a cinematic tribute to one of Britain’s pioneering female swimmers, Mercedes Gleitze, the film “Vindication Swim” is set to premiere across WTW Cinemas in Cornwall, including locations in Newquay, St Austell, Truro, and Wadebridge starting from the 8th of March. This screening coincides with International Women’s Day, aiming to honour the remarkable achievements of Gleitze during the 1920s.
Directed by the acclaimed Elliott Hasler, “Vindication Swim” casts Kirsten Callaghan in her first leading role as Mercedes Gleitze, the trailblazing swimmer who in 1927 became the first British woman to conquer the English Channel. To bring authenticity to her portrayal, Callaghan underwent extensive training in the English Channel prior to filming.
The film boasts a star-studded lineup including John Locke, known for his roles in “Darkest Hour,” “Poor Things,” and “The Favourite,” alongside James Wilby (“Maurice,” “Gosford Park,” “Howards End”) and Douglas Hodge (“Joker,” “The Great,” “Black Mirror”). “Vindication Swim” delves into Gleitze’s formidable journey, not only battling the treacherous waters of the English Channel but also confronting the societal constraints of 1920s England. Her story takes a dramatic turn when a rival claims to have achieved the same feat, prompting Gleitze to defend her record and legacy.
Mercedes Gleitze’s name, though not widely remembered, is synonymous with groundbreaking achievements, including being the first person to complete several formidable swims across the globe, such as the Straits of Gibraltar, the Dardanelles, and the distance between Robben Island and Cape Town. The release of “Vindication Swim” aims to reignite interest in Gleitze’s extraordinary life and achievements. As the film unveils on the 8th of March, Cornwall residents are invited to join in commemorating International Women’s Day and celebrating the indomitable spirit of Mercedes Gleitze.
