Crowds Gather for Falmouth’s Christmas Lights Switch-On
Falmouth lit up in more ways than one last night as huge crowds gathered on The Moor for the town’s annual Christmas Lights Switch-On. The much-loved celebration marked the official start of the festive season and brought a mix of music, performance and community pride.
Music, Tractors and a Festive Parade
The evening opened with Sing Choir on The Moor music stage, setting the tone as excitement built across the town. The Christmas parade set off from Events Square, led by 16 tractors organised by the Mayor of Falmouth, Alan Jewell. Local farmers decorated each tractor with Christmas lights.
The foot parade followed behind, led by Kernow Pipes and Drums and joined by the familiar sight of Betty Stogs on her bicycle. Hundreds of primary schoolchildren took part, creating a colourful and lively route through the streets before arriving on The Moor.
Performances from Falmouth’s Schools
Once the parade reached The Moor, performances continued with all five of Falmouth’s primary schools. Each group took its turn singing carols and festive favourites to a crowd of more than a thousand people.
The evening was compered by Will Keating of The Oggymen, who kept the audience entertained before closing the night with a lively set from the popular local band.
A Special Moment for Danny Trick
This year’s guest of honour was community champion Danny Trick, who was invited to switch on the Christmas lights in recognition of his contribution to the town. Joined by family, friends and members of the Falmouth Marine Band, Danny lit up Falmouth to cheers from the crowd.
Praise for Volunteers and Partners
Keren Cooksey, Falmouth BID Manager, said:
“Last night was everything a Christmas lights switch-on should be, full of warmth and community spirit. Seeing so many people gathered together, enjoying the music and sharing the start of the festive season, was incredibly special. A huge thank you goes to the Town Team, Reach Maintenance for the magical lights, The Oggymen, our local primary schools and everyone behind the scenes who worked so hard to bring the event together, as well as all the performers and volunteers who made the evening feel so magical.”
More Festive Events to Come
The Christmas Lights Switch-On signals the start of a busy festive calendar in Falmouth throughout December, including the popular festive weekend on 6th and 7th December.
