Discover the Sensory Delights of Trebah’s Court Garden: Celebrating a Full Year of Flourishing Beauty

Published On: 13 May 2024Last Updated: 13 May 2024By

Trebah Garden marked an exciting milestone on Sunday, 12th May, celebrating the first anniversary of its unique Court Garden.

This beautifully crafted space offers free access and is designed to appeal to all senses. Positioned near the award-winning Visitor Centre, it provides a stark contrast to Trebah’s more wild sub-tropical valley garden, focusing on formal plant arrangements with an emphasis on local flora.

Seasonal Transformations at Court Garden

From its initial planting, Court Garden has seen the full circle of seasons, each adding its unique touch to the garden’s evolving beauty. The carefully constructed stone walls of the garden create a microclimate that nurtures a variety of plants year-round. In its inaugural spring, visitors were greeted by bananas, rare succulents, and vibrant flower borders. The planting scheme transitioned through the seasons: summer brought a pollinator-friendly display of warm and cool colours, while autumn and winter introduced fragrant violas, wallflowers, hyacinths, narcissus, and forget-me-nots. Now, in its second spring, the garden is once again a kaleidoscope of colour and fragrance.

Enhanced Accessibility for All

The Court Garden is not just a feast for the eyes and nose but also a testament to Trebah’s commitment to accessibility. The garden’s design allows people with additional access needs to enjoy much more of what Trebah has to offer. It also serves as a perfect venue for events, including the recent Cornwall International Male Choral Festival, benefiting from the garden’s flat terrain and ample seating.

Support and Leadership for the Future

The addition of bespoke steel gates, funded by the Tanner Phoenix Fund through the Cornwall Community Foundation, has completed the Court Garden’s charming aesthetic. Leadership changes saw Jon Cummins stepping in as the CEO of Trebah Garden Trust, following Nigel Burnett’s retirement. Jon reflects on the successful integration of the Court Garden into the Trebah landscape, praising the Trebah team’s efforts in seasonal planting that ensures the garden remains a point of interest throughout the year.
