Epic Ocean Race Returns: 2027 Azores and Back (AZAB) Challenge Launched

The Royal Cornwall Yacht Club (RCYC) has officially launched the 2027 Azores and Back Race (AZAB), an epic ocean challenge that sees sailors race from Falmouth to the Azores and back in a test of endurance, skill and adventure.

With the 50-year anniversary of the first AZAB race being marked this year, excitement is already building for the June 2027 event, which will see competitors tackle the 2,400-mile round trip to Ponta Delgada in the Azores.

A True Corinthian Challenge

Open to both solo sailors and double-handed crews, AZAB is designed to embrace the true spirit of Corinthian sailing – a race that values camaraderie and adventure just as much as competition.

RCYC Commodore Shane Carr said:

“It’s fantastic to begin the countdown for the next AZAB race now, in the year we celebrate 50 years since we ran the first event in 1975. It’s a unique event held every four years – the only ocean race to start and finish in the UK – and it’s a part of the Club’s heritage that we are so proud of.”

Already, 49 skippers from eight nations have signalled their intent to take part, with at least five past competitors preparing to return.

Falmouth to the Azores and Back

The race begins in Falmouth Harbour, a location steeped in maritime history, before sailors take on the Atlantic challenge to Ponta Delgada on São Miguel, the largest island in the Azores. There, they will have the chance to rest, repair, and restock before tackling the return leg to Cornwall.

The route is renowned for its demanding conditions, but also its accessibility. With a focus on cost-effective entry and low-key, inclusive logistics, it remains one of the most affordable long-distance ocean races.

Race Director Sarah Hancock described the AZAB experience as:

“A race like no other—a chance to prove what you can achieve, an opportunity to make life-long friends, with an incredible level of support and encouragement from co-competitors as well as from the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club in Falmouth and the Clube Naval de Ponta Delgada in São Miguel at the starts and finishes.”

Follow the Race

All boats in the AZAB race will be fitted with trackers, allowing family, friends and sailing enthusiasts to follow their journey in real time.

With sponsorship opportunities now available for AZAB 2027 and AZAB 50, local businesses and supporters of offshore racing can get involved in backing this prestigious event. More details can be found at www.azab.co.uk.
