Falmouth Celebrates Independents’ Day with Week of Events Showcasing Local Businesses
Meet the local businesses celebrating Independents’ Day this week
Falmouth is flying the flag for its independent businesses this week, with a packed programme of digital and in-store events running from Wednesday 2nd to Wednesday 9th July.
The town is taking part in the UK-wide Independents’ Day campaign on the 4th and 5th July, spotlighting the unique shops and traders that make up more than 75% of Falmouth’s town centre businesses. That’s significantly above the national average of 65% for independent retailers across the UK.
From artisan crafts to coastal fashion and pet supplies, Falmouth’s high street is home to a wide range of independent shops that bring character and community pride to the town.
“Independent businesses are not only central to that mix, but they are also essential to the town’s success,” said Mel Richardson, spokesperson for Falmouth Business Improvement District (BID).
“They bring personality, local expertise, and a deep pride of place. Independents’ Day offers the perfect opportunity to celebrate their contribution and highlight the creativity, connection and resilience that make Falmouth’s high street truly unique.”
Behind the Counters
Seven local shops are taking centre stage this week with social media takeovers, short films and in-store features. From ‘Meet the Maker’ videos to curated displays, the celebrations aim to show the people behind the products.
Here’s a look at the businesses leading the campaign:
The Oystercatcher
Based on Church Street, The Oystercatcher is a lifestyle shop owned by Sarah and Brendan. Inspired by their roots in a beachside tearoom in North Devon, they’ve built a curated coastal-themed store offering homeware, furniture, artwork, and gifts.
Salt Art Supply
Rhianna Fowler and Nyassa Hinde opened this independent art and stationery store on Killigrew Street in 2023. The Falmouth University graduates focus on sustainability and community, and stock quality materials for artists of all levels.
Castle Sports and Uniform
Run by Cath Horton and Teresa McCormack, this Killigrew Street shop is the go-to place for sports gear and school uniforms, providing practical support to local families and schools.
Inspire Makers
Founded by Vicki Glaister, this shop on the High Street showcases handmade jewellery, ceramics, textiles and more. It also hosts creative workshops and provides space for emerging makers.
“Independent businesses like Inspire Makers provide a platform to small, local creatives who might not otherwise have a space to showcase their work,” said Vicki, who also sits on the Falmouth BID board.
“Supporting independent businesses is more important than ever. It keeps money in the local economy and helps our town centre remain unique, resilient, and full of life.”
Pebble Cornwall
Zoe Groom’s family-run boutique has three locations across Cornwall. The Falmouth branch on Church Street specialises in timeless women’s fashion and accessories with a focus on quality and craftsmanship.
Sophie Tilston
Sophie’s lifestyle shop on Arwenack Street sells handmade homewares including lampshades and tea towels, inspired by coastal living and vintage style. Each item is crafted to reflect her nostalgic, seaside aesthetic.
Southpaw Dog Store
This Church Street pet shop, founded by Desney Ryan, offers a carefully selected range of products for dogs and their humans. The focus is on quality, wellbeing, and personal advice.
More Than Just a Campaign
The week-long celebrations are part of the UK-wide Independents’ Day campaign, but Falmouth’s strong showing of independent businesses makes the event especially meaningful in the town. With daily social content, behind-the-scenes videos and a chance to meet local makers, the campaign puts the spotlight firmly on the small businesses that make Falmouth’s high street one of the most unique in the country.
