Falmouth Harbour to Manage Seasonal Race Marks for Local Sailing Clubs
Falmouth Harbour and the Port of Falmouth Sailing Association have announced a new partnership that will see the harbour authority manage seasonal race marks on behalf of local sailing clubs.
Under the agreement, Falmouth Harbour will lay 16 sponsored race marks in Falmouth Bay and the Carrick Roads before the start of the main sailing season and retrieve them at the end. The marks will support six sailing clubs that organise more than 300 sailing events each year and are represented by the Port of Falmouth Sailing Association.
Supporting More Than 300 Events a Year
The yellow race marks, each sponsored by local businesses, are used alongside navigation marks by event organisers to create varied and challenging race courses. These can then be adjusted to suit different wind and sea conditions.
PoFSA Chair Gaye Slater said: “The high quality of racing in Falmouth not only benefits local sailors but attracts visitors from other parts of the UK and abroad to some of the largest and most exciting sailing events in the country.”
PoFSA Sponsorship Coordinator Tim Sherratt added: “This partnership with Falmouth Harbour is a really positive move and a great example of FH’s practical support for sailing in the harbour. We’re fortunate to have such great relationships with our sponsors and supporters in the business and local communities.”
Marine Expertise and Environmental Focus
Falmouth Harbour brings the marine expertise and resources needed to lay and recover the seasonal race marks in a way that supports local clubs. The harbour team already manages 600 moorings for leisure and commercial activities.
Falmouth Harbour CEO Miles Carden said: “We’re really pleased to be working with PoFSA to help deliver high-quality sailing within the harbour. By supporting our local clubs we’re also helping to attract visiting sailors to our waters and maintain Falmouth’s reputation as a national leading sailing venue.
“Just as important, this partnership approach ensures on-the-water activities are managed in the best, safest ways to protect the harbour’s sensitive environments.”
