Mystery Yacht Turns Out to Be Wayfarer Dinghy: Falmouth Lifeboat Called Out Again

Published On: 15 April 2025Last Updated: 15 April 2025By

The Falmouth RNLI inshore lifeboat was called into action on Sunday 13th April after a yacht was reportedly aground near Nare Point – but the situation turned out to be quite different.

Pagers Sounded Early on Sunday Morning

The relief Atlantic 85 inshore lifeboat Sam and Freda Parkinson launched at 8.45am after pagers were triggered at 8.37am. HM Coastguard had received a report of a yacht aground at Nare Point, prompting the tasking.

The crew reached the scene by 9am in cloudy weather with good visibility, a force 3 north-west wind and slight sea conditions.

A Grounded Dinghy, Not a Yacht

Once on scene, the lifeboat crew quickly identified the casualty vessel as a Wayfarer dinghy – not the yacht initially reported. The dinghy had drifted and ended up aground with the falling tide making recovery impossible at the time.

As there was no one in danger and nothing could be done immediately, the inshore lifeboat was stood down at 9.45am, leaving the dinghy to be recovered later.

Fourth Call-Out in Two Weeks

This was the fourth service in just two weeks for Sam and Freda Parkinson (Atlantic 85 inshore lifeboat), and marks the 14th call-out so far this year for the Falmouth RNLI station.

Support for the station can be given via their JustGiving campaign.
