New Commissioners Appointed to Falmouth Harbour Board for 2025
Falmouth Harbour has confirmed the final appointments to its Board of Commissioners for 2025, welcoming two new non executive members and completing an open recruitment process that has also seen a new Chair appointed.
The changes come as the Trust Port looks ahead to its future, building on more than 150 years of managing one of the world’s deepest natural harbours.
New Commissioners Appointed
James Langley and Michael Glanville have joined the Board as Marine Commissioners.
James Langley brings extensive experience in maritime, port and cruise sector operational management. Michael Glanville joins with a background at board level across marinas, leisure and property sectors. Their appointments place them alongside the recently appointed Chair, Nigel Tipple.
Nigel Tipple has a 30 year career spanning private and public sector organisations at both board and executive level. Together, they now form part of the seven strong Board of Commissioners responsible for shaping the harbour’s strategy and long term prosperity.
Leadership and Vision
Falmouth Harbour Chief Executive Miles Carden said the organisation had attracted a large and high quality field of candidates, describing the appointments as an exciting outcome that delivered the broad mix of skills and senior experience the harbour was seeking.
Miles also highlighted the responsibility of balancing the needs of stakeholders with environmental considerations across what he described as one of the greatest natural harbours in the world.
James Langley said he was honoured to join the Board at a pivotal time, pointing to the harbour’s rich history and its crucial role in maritime operations. Michael Glanville described his appointment as a privilege and said he was committed to supporting sustainable growth while protecting the harbour’s unique character and environment.
About Falmouth Harbour
As a Trust Port, Falmouth Harbour has managed the third deepest natural harbour in the world for more than 150 years. It is strategically located on the UK’s western approaches.
The Harbour Commissioners oversee the operation of Falmouth Harbour, Falmouth Haven and Falmouth Pilot Services. Their statutory responsibilities include safety, navigation and conservation across around 65 square miles of harbour area.
Income is generated through commercial shipping dues, leisure facility charges and pilotage services. With no shareholders, all surpluses are reinvested into the harbour for the benefit of current and future users, with accountability to the local community.
Farewell to Long Serving Commissioners
The new appointments coincide with the departure of three long serving Commissioners. Outgoing Chair Mark Chanter, alongside John Elliott and Gerald Pitts, step down after a combined 18 years of service on the Board.
Miles Carden thanked Mark, John and Gerald for their dedication and contribution, while also acknowledging recruitment partner Anna Jay from Public Leaders Appointments for leading the search process.
Anna Jay said the response to the recruitment campaign was exceptional, with candidates from across the maritime, commercial and public sectors, adding that Nigel, James and Michael each bring deep expertise and a strong commitment to the harbour’s future.
