New Falmouth Skatepark Opens Ahead of Schedule – Here’s What You Need to Know!

The much-anticipated Falmouth Skatepark has officially opened at Dracaena playing fields, marking a major milestone for the local community just in time for the summer holidays.

The project, driven by the dedicated Falmouth Skatepark Project Committee and Falmouth Town Council, has been over 15 years in the making.

Early Completion Surprises and Delights

Thanks to the collaboration with Maverick Skateparks, the construction was completed well ahead of the initial August 2024 deadline. The park is now open to skateboarders, scooters, roller-skaters, and in-line skaters of all ages and abilities.

Councillor Kirstie Edwards, along with the Falmouth Skatepark committee members and Falmouth Town Council’s Grounds Manager Simon Penna, were present for the official sign-off by inspectors. Kirstie expressed her joy, stating, “We are absolutely thrilled that the Falmouth Skatepark is now open. It is the culmination of years of effort to bring this much-needed asset to the town and I am so proud of what the community has achieved.”

Community and Funding

The skatepark’s completion is a testament to the community’s effort, supported by local businesses such as Sessions Surf & Skate Shop, Falmouth and Penryn Lions Club, and Cornish Holiday Cottages. Significant funding came from Falmouth Town Council and a substantial £145,000 grant from The National Lottery Community Fund.

Town Mayor Alan Rowe also celebrated the opening, highlighting its significance as part of Falmouth Town Council’s commitment to enhancing recreational facilities. “I’m certain this skatepark will be a magnet for Falmouth’s young people and young at heart,” Alan remarked.

Future Enhancements

While the skatepark is open, some elements of the project are still to be completed:

  • Planting and Landscaping: Grass seed, wildflowers, and trees will be planted around the park in the autumn. Users are requested to be mindful of these areas until the planting is complete.
  • Public Toilet: Efforts are underway to convert an existing toilet at the Dracaena Centre into a public facility accessible during and outside the centre’s opening hours.
  • Seating: New seating will be installed around the skatepark by the end of the summer, depending on the supplier’s availability.

Looking Ahead to ‘Skatefete’

An official opening event, ‘Skatefete’, is scheduled for Saturday, 7th September 2024. The event will feature live music, a skating competition, food and drink, art activities led by Falmouth Art Gallery, and a football penalty challenge. Community groups interested in participating are encouraged to contact the Falmouth Skatepark Committee through their Facebook page.
