Works to remove three trees and plant four new ones on Trelawney Road in Falmouth are scheduled to begin next month.

Ecology Survey Clears the Way

An independent ecology survey took place on Thursday, 20th November, confirming there are no birds nesting or bats roosting in the trees. With that clearance in place, Cornwall Council will move ahead with the planned works.

To carry out the removal safely, the road will be closed and fenced off before any work begins. Residents are being asked to respect the cordon while the work is underway.

The provisional start date is Monday, 8th December.

Public Meeting Set for Early December

A public meeting will take place at 6pm on Wednesday, 3rd December, in the Atherton Suite at the Falmouth Town Council Offices in the Old Post Office building on The Moor.

Phil Mason, Strategic Director at Cornwall Council, will speak about the works and answer questions from the public.

Four New Trees Chosen and Ready for Planting

After the existing trees are removed, new paving and root barriers will be installed. Four new trees, each around 4.5 to 5 metres tall, will then be planted.

The selected species are a Tassel Cherry (Prunus litigiosa), a Fastigiate Beech (Fagus Dawyck Gold), a Sweet Gum (Liquiambar Worplesdon) and a Fastigiate Oak (Quercus bimundorum Crimschmidt). All four have been hand picked to ensure strong specimens are planted.

New tree pits designed to provide better space above ground and improved conditions below ground will also be installed. Once planted, the Council’s Highways Service will monitor and care for the trees.

Councillor Dan Rogerson, Cornwall Council’s Portfolio Holder for Transport, said: “We know that people will be saddened to see the trees taken down. We are legally required to remove the trees, and I urge everyone to respect the cordon and allow the staff to work safely. The team have taken great care selecting the new trees and planting them now means we can give them the best chance possible.”
