Woodland Trust Launches Tree Giveaway to Boost Biodiversity and Climate Resilience in South West Farms

Published On: 16 January 2024Last Updated: 26 September 2024By

In a move to enhance farm biodiversity and combat climate change, the Woodland Trust has announced its Tree Giveaway initiative for farmers across the South West region. This program aims to distribute over 100,000 trees to local farmers, free of charge, reinforcing the Trust’s commitment to environmental sustainability and agricultural resilience.

The initiative, generously funded by Lloyds Bank, offers farmers the opportunity to receive tree packs, each containing 45 trees or shrubs. These packs are specially curated to align with different farming goals, offering options like hedgerow ‘in-fill,’ copse, and wildlife packs.

One of the most notable aspects of this giveaway is the support provided by woodland creation experts. These professionals will be available at tree collection points to offer invaluable advice on woodland creation, agroforestry, and the various funding options available to farmers. This hands-on guidance is expected to significantly enhance the effective integration of trees into diverse farming practices.

Why are trees so crucial for farms? The Woodland Trust highlights several benefits:

  • Climate Resilience: Trees offer shade, shelter, and windbreaks, thus creating a more resilient environment for crops and livestock. They also serve as natural carbon sinks, helping to offset carbon emissions.
  • Soil Health: The presence of trees can lead to improved soil structure, enhanced nutrient cycling, and better water retention, fostering healthier and more productive soils.
  • Biodiversity: Trees are vital in creating diverse ecosystems. They attract beneficial insects and provide habitats for various bird species and wildlife, enriching the ecological balance of the area.

Participation in the scheme is straightforward. Farmers interested in enhancing their land with trees can visit the Woodland Trust’s website and fill out an online application form. They can select tree packs that best suit their farm’s needs and choose a collection date and site from 18 different locations across the South West. Participants will also receive an email reminder a few days before their chosen event with final details for collection.

The Woodland Trust’s initiative has been met with enthusiasm, echoing its popularity in previous years. Early applications are encouraged, as the tree packs have been quickly distributed in the past. This initiative not only represents a significant step towards environmental stewardship but also reinforces the symbiotic relationship between agriculture and nature conservation.

Farmers and interested parties can learn more about the giveaway, frequently asked questions, and terms and conditions on the Woodland Trust’s website.
