Singing Makes You Feel Better, a new documentary following Men Are Singing, is about to arrive on cinema screens across Cornwall, telling the story of the county’s first alternative male voice choir.

Directed by Tim Simpson and filmed by Director of Photography Tom Kirkman, the documentary captures the full arc of this Falmouth based group, from its beginnings to its emotional final chapter after founder Seamas Carey chose to leave Cornwall and close the choir.

A 50 Man Chorus That Changed Perceptions

Men Are Singing was founded in 2018 by Seamas Carey as an enquiry into why younger men were no longer joining choirs. Over six years the group grew into a 50 man chorus that headlined festivals, created new traditions and championed a positive image of masculinity and men’s mental health.

Described as “beloved” by The Guardian, the choir became known for its energetic style and its mix of beautiful, boisterous and sensitive performances.

Inside the Documentary

The film features live footage from the choir’s final performance, as well as intimate interviews and behind the scenes moments with members. It charts the group’s origin story, their artistic discoveries and the process that led to their final ending.

Screenings are already in high demand.
Sunday 30th Nov 4pm at The Poly in Falmouth is sold out.
Tuesday 2nd Dec 8pm at Newlyn Filmhouse is sold out.
Wednesday 3rd Dec 8pm at The Plaza in Truro includes short films and a Q&A.

First and Final Album Released

Alongside the film, the choir has released its first and final album. The vinyl record includes 13 tracks chosen by members, reflecting the group’s varied musical style. Copies will be on sale at screenings, and the album is also available now on Spotify, Apple, YouTube and Tidal.

Bonus Documentary at Newlyn and Truro

The Newlyn and Truro screenings will also feature Who’s The Most Cornish Person You Know? (2024). In this light hearted film, Seamas Carey teams up with filmmaker Neal Megaw to follow a chain of interviews and conversations as they try to get closer to what defines Cornishness.

Both documentaries offer a rare look into the creativity, humour and thoughtfulness behind one of Cornwall’s most distinctive musical groups.
