Published On: 12 December 2024Last Updated: 12 December 2024By

Mark Norton, a beloved husband, father, and inspirational leader, has passed away at the age of 60. Mark’s remarkable journey as Managing Director and owner of the Prima Bakeries Group left an indelible mark on the Cornish business community. Diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease in September 2024, Mark passed peacefully on 26th November, surrounded by his family.

Building a Legacy in Cornish Baking

Mark was best known for his transformative leadership of Prima Bakeries and Cornish Premier Pasties. Since acquiring Prima Bakeries in 2010, his vision and determination propelled the business to unprecedented growth. Under his stewardship, Prima Bakeries grew tenfold, with turnover increasing from £370,000 to £3.7 million and staff numbers rising from 19 to 90.

In 2020, during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic, Mark made the bold decision to acquire Cornish Premier Pasties, a competitor 30% larger than Prima Bakeries. His leadership saw sales grow by 55%, with the acquisition loan repaid ahead of schedule. Mark’s dedication to excellence was celebrated when Cornish Premier Pasties earned Gold and Silver awards in the Traditional Cornish Pasty category at the World Pasty Championships in 2022.

Commitment to Cornwall and Its People

Mark’s impact extended beyond financial success. Earlier this year, he transitioned the Prima Bakeries Group to an Employee Ownership Trust, ensuring job security and preserving the company’s Cornish roots. In September 2024, Mark led the acquisition of Furniss of Cornwall, integrating this iconic biscuit maker into the Group.

Mark’s passion for supporting his team was evident in Prima Bakeries’ high staff morale and low turnover rates. He was also known for mentoring start-ups and contributing to the local business community as Finance Officer of the Cornish Pasty Association.

A Life of Passion and Devotion

Born on 11th April 1964 in Kettering, Mark’s journey took him to Plymouth for university and later to France, where he and his family embraced a new lifestyle. His entrepreneurial spirit was matched by a love for travel, classic cars, and family adventures. A lifelong dream came true this year when Mark celebrated his 60th birthday with his wife Lynne in Texas, witnessing a total eclipse.

Mark’s children, Emma and Sam, both followed in his footsteps, working their way into senior management roles at Prima Bakeries. His pride in their achievements, including recognition in Cornwall’s 30 Under 30 list, was a testament to his devotion as a father.

A Celebration of Life

Mark’s passing leaves behind his loving wife Lynne, his children Emma and Sam, and many cherished friends, colleagues, and extended family members. A celebration of his life will be held on Thursday, 19th December, at Treswithian Downs Crematorium in Camborne.

Mark Norton will be remembered for his generosity, integrity, and the lasting impact he made on his team, community, and loved ones. His remarkable legacy will continue to inspire those who knew him.
