Cornwall’s Pocketful of Stones Expands into Italian Market
Penzance distillery expands European reach as demand for quirky gin surges
Cornish craft distillery Pocketful of Stones has officially launched into the Italian market, marking a major step in its international growth. Best known for its eye-catching Dr Squid gin, the Penzance-based company is now working with Italian drinks distributor Asolo Bevande to bring its distinctive spirits to a new audience.
European growth gathers pace
This move comes off the back of solid success in the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Hungary. Despite ongoing global and regional economic pressures, Pocketful of Stones has managed to hold its ground and grow its export footprint across Europe.
The company’s latest expansion into Italy follows support from the Department for Business and Trade, which identified a growing demand for premium gin and whisky among Italian consumers. The launch also follows recent availability in the Falkland Islands.
“Breaking into the Italian market is a huge milestone for us,” said Co-Founder Mike Cunliffe. “Italy’s growing appreciation for high-quality, distinctive spirits makes it a natural next step for our brand, and Dr Squid’s quirky character is already generating excitement among local buyers.”
Sales surging despite challenges
The distillery has seen a 500% surge in demand for Dr Squid gin over the past three years. Export sales are also up 100% since June last year, according to Mike.
Despite challenges caused by post-Brexit trade changes and production bottlenecks, including the difficulties in scaling up their bespoke copper flasks, Pocketful of Stones has increased its output capacity. Support from Cornwall Council helped the team complete upgrades to its stills, which they’ve named Jackson and Virginia.
“We’re not ready to stop yet!” added Mike.
What is Dr Squid?
Dr Squid is a 40% ABV gin sold in a distinctive copper flask, priced at £50 for 70cl. While it works well in a classic gin and tonic, it’s also recommended in a Gin Mule (served with crushed ice and ginger beer) or in a Dark Negroni (25ml Dr Squid Gin, 25ml Campari, and 25ml Red Vermouth served over ice).
In the UK, Dr Squid is available direct from the Pocketful of Stones website and also from Master of Malt, Distillers Direct, Amazon, and Tesco Marketplace.
With the Italian market now added to the list, the Cornish distillery looks set to continue its push for wider international recognition.
