Gleaning Cornwall’s Crowdfunding Appeal: Helping to Feed Thousands Across Cornwall
Gleaning Cornwall, a Community Interest Company formed in 2021, has grown to become Europe’s largest gleaning group. Their dedicated volunteers harvest surplus crops donated by local farmers and deliver fresh produce to over 50 food banks, community larders, and kitchens in Cornwall and West Devon.
This effort provides vital support to families facing food insecurity. In a region where 13% of households struggle with food access and one in five children live in poverty, fresh fruit and vegetables are often out of reach.
“Most of the food we donate feeds working families and the elderly,” states the team, “but some recipients are veterans, people sheltering from abuse, or those facing financial shocks.”
How Gleaning Cornwall Makes a Difference
Last year, Gleaning Cornwall distributed nearly 90 tonnes of fresh produce, saving local food charities an estimated £160,000. These efforts also prevented 218 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions by reducing food waste.
By connecting food charities with each other, Gleaning Cornwall strengthens local networks, enabling better mutual support. Their online map helps people in crisis find essential services and helps organisations signpost others to relevant resources.
Why Support Gleaning Cornwall?
Operating costs for the organisation include part-time staff wages, petrol, transport expenses, insurance, and equipment. As they transition to charitable status to access broader funding opportunities, Gleaning Cornwall is launching a crowdfunding appeal.
Every pound donated will be matched by Aviva, doubling its impact. “For each £1 we receive, we save a local food charity £3.80, and with match funding, this becomes £7.60,” the team explains. Contributions will bridge the current funding gap, ensuring the continuation of their essential work.

What is Gleaning?
Gleaning, an ancient practice mentioned in the Bible, involves collecting leftover crops from farms for redistribution. Cornwall’s agricultural abundance, community spirit, and environmental focus make it an ideal location for this effort.
Farmers, who often over-produce to meet contract requirements, face waste when crops grow unevenly or fail to meet buyer standards. By donating surplus, they not only reduce waste but also support their communities.
The Challenges in Cornwall
Cornwall faces ongoing challenges from the cost of living crisis, a housing shortage, and low wages. Local food charities are feeding over 12,000 people weekly, but the need remains critical. Gleaning Cornwall provides fresh produce these charities often struggle to source elsewhere.
A Community Effort
Beyond the immediate impact of providing food, Gleaning Cornwall offers volunteers outdoor exercise with purpose, educates participants about local, seasonal produce, and fosters stronger connections within the community.
As they continue their transformative work, Gleaning Cornwall hopes their crowdfunding campaign will secure the resources they need to keep feeding families and reducing waste. To donate or learn more, visit their Crowdfunding page.
