Fowey Lifeboat Crew Called into Action as Yacht Breaks Free

Published On: 26 August 2024Last Updated: 26 August 2024By

On the evening of 19 August, the usually serene waters of Fowey Harbour were the scene of unexpected drama. At 10:45 pm, Fowey RNLI lifeboat station received an urgent request from Falmouth coastguard to assist in securing a motor yacht that had broken free from its mooring.

The 50-foot motor boat was adrift, posing a significant hazard as it collided with other vessels moored in the harbour. With Fowey Regatta Week in full swing, the harbour was particularly crowded, heightening concerns about potential damage and further accidents.

Lifeboat Crew to the Rescue

Given the time of night and the crowded conditions, the decision was made to deploy Fowey’s all-weather lifeboat to locate and secure the drifting vessel. The lifeboat crew swiftly responded, navigating the busy harbour to track down the wayward yacht.

Upon locating the vessel, the lifeboat crew managed to safely tow it back to a secure mooring, preventing any further incidents in the already congested harbour.

A Swift and Successful Operation

The successful recovery of the yacht by the Fowey lifeboat crew ensured that no further damage occurred to other boats in the harbour. The quick response prevented what could have been a far more disruptive event during one of the busiest weeks of the year for Fowey Harbour.

This incident underscores the vital role of the RNLI and the importance of their readiness to respond at any time, particularly during busy events like Fowey Regatta Week.
