Fowey Lifeboat Launches on First Call-Out After Going on Service

Family Rescued After Jet Ski Breakdown Off Fowey

Just hours after officially going on service, Fowey’s new relief Atlantic 85 lifeboat launched on its very first shout on Sunday 27th July.

The call-out came only three days after the Fowey crew qualified to launch the new craft, marking a rapid start for the freshly trained team and their boat.

Jet Ski Trouble Near the Harbour

The coastguard requested assistance after a family of two adults and three children got into difficulty around a quarter of a mile south of Fowey Harbour entrance.

One of their jet skis had broken down on the way home from a day out. As they tried to assist themselves, a second jet ski became tangled in a rope, leaving them unable to help.

Although drifting, the group was not in immediate danger.

Safe Tow and Drop-Off

Fowey’s lifeboat crew launched promptly and took all five casualties safely aboard the Atlantic 85. The lifeboat then towed the jet skis to the harbour entrance, where Harbour Patrol boats helped take them to the slipway for recovery.

The family was dropped off at Caffa Mill so they could collect the jet skis with a trailer.

This was the first shout for Fowey’s new relief lifeboat since officially entering service and a swift demonstration of the crew’s training in action.
