Fowey Lifeboat Saves Stranded Motor Boat Near Rocks
On 19th July, the Fowey RNLI inshore lifeboat was launched following a coastguard request to assist a 16ft motor boat that had broken down on the east side of Fowey Harbour. The vessel, drifting perilously close to rocks, was in a potentially dangerous situation.
Initial Call and Rapid Response
The call for assistance was somewhat indirect, as the individual on the stranded motor boat had contacted a friend who then alerted the coastguard. Despite the vague location provided, the volunteer crew swiftly launched the lifeboat at 3:35pm.
On-Scene Assistance and Tow Back to Safety
Upon launch, the coastguard informed the lifeboat crew that a local boat was already assisting the stranded vessel. Given the rough sea state at the location, it was decided that the lifeboat would proceed to ensure the safety of all involved.
One member of the lifeboat crew boarded the motor boat to set up a tow line. The lifeboat then towed the casualty vessel back into the harbour. Once safely within the harbour, the motor boat was handed over to the Fowey Harbour Commissioners’ patrol boat.
A Reminder from Fowey Lifeboat Operations Manager
Chris Ogg, Fowey lifeboat operations manager, emphasised the importance of contacting the coastguard in emergencies: “We would like to remind people that if you get into difficulties at sea or see someone in trouble, call 999 and ask for the coastguard”.
This incident serves as a timely reminder of the critical role played by the RNLI and local volunteers in ensuring the safety of those at sea.
