Trevithick 12k Race Report: Strong Start for Hayle Runners
The new Trevithick 12k proved to be a winning start to the GP series for Hayle Runners, with a huge turnout and a stack of podium finishes on Sunday 18th January.
A total of 99 club runners took part in the inaugural race, creating a sea of green both on the course and among the supporters lining the route.
A New Race for 2026
The Trevithick 12k replaced the long standing Storm Force 10 as the opening race of the GP series. Organised by Carn Runners, the revised course offered a shorter but still demanding challenge.
Runners passed through Penponds, Barripper, Carnhell Green, Reawla and Rosewarne before looping back to the finish. The route included 131 metres of ascent and 126 metres of descent, combining rolling terrain with long runnable sections that encouraged fast times.
Team Success for Hayle
Hayle’s women powered to first place as a team, thanks to Tear Lily, Charlotte Bennett, Kirsty Medlock, Debbie Jayne, Fiona Gamble and Lee Strickland.
The men matched that success, also taking first place. The winning team was made up of Sam Farmer, Neil Hayhurst, Jordan Morant, Ross Reilly, Jack Newman and Kieran Murrant.
Strong Performances Across Age Groups
There was a wide spread of age category success for Hayle runners.
On the women’s side, Tear Rogers took bronze in the under 35s, Kirsty Medlock finished third in the 45 to 49 category, Charlotte Bennett claimed gold in the 50 to 54 group and Debbie Harrison Webb secured silver in the 55 to 59s. Margaret Clark earned bronze in the 65 to 69 category, while Andrea Simmons took gold and Diane Warren silver in the 70 to 74 age group.
The men also enjoyed a strong medal haul. Sam Farmer won gold in the under 35s, Jordan Morant finished third in the 35 to 39s, Paul Warmington claimed silver in the 40 to 44 category and Neil Hayhurst took gold in the 45 to 49s.
Further success followed with Ian Curnow taking silver in the 55 to 59s, Steve Wherry winning gold in the 60 to 64 category, Jon Eldon securing gold in the 65 to 69s, Chunky Penhaul taking silver in the 75 to 79 group and Steward Townend finishing first in the 80 plus category.
A Cracking Start to the Season
Club chairman Richard Collett described the results as a strong opening to the year for Hayle Runners.
“Winning both the men’s and ladies’ team competitions, and picking up 15 age category prizes, really shows the depth of the club and the effort our members are putting in across the board,” said Richard.
“The conditions were spot on, the new Trevithick 12K route was a great test, and Carn Runners did an excellent job hosting a well-run event. We’re proud of the performances, but just as pleased with how the club turned out and raced together.”
Personal Bests All Round
Alongside the silverware, there were plenty of personal milestones. Laura Patryas, Sam Kearney, Amy Greef, Ruby King and Teigan Turner all recorded 10k personal bests, while Soraya Williams achieved both a 5k and 10k PB.
As it was the first time the Trevithick 12k had been run, every participant walked away with a benchmark time to aim for in future years.
Race two of the GP series takes place at the Newquay 10k on Sunday 1st February.
