Clinical Supervision Course Launches at Cornwall Counselling Institute
A new Level 5 Clinical Supervision course has launched at Cornwall Counselling Institute, designed to support experienced practitioners working in demanding roles across health, care, education and emergency services.
The course offers flexible, blended learning and is aimed at professionals who want to develop safe, ethical and effective supervision practice alongside their existing jobs.
Supporting experienced professionals
Cornwall Counselling Institute, which is part of Cornwall College Group, delivers counselling, psychology and well-being training across the region, from short introductory courses through to practitioner qualifications and routes into Higher Education.
This newly approved Clinical Supervision training is for experienced professionals who wish to develop the skills needed to offer supervisory support to peers, trainees and multidisciplinary teams. It is expected to appeal to those working in health and care professions, teaching and support roles, and the emergency services.
Why the course was developed
“Whilst Clinical Supervision is common in the fields of counselling and psychology, many people working in highly skilled and demanding roles have to manage the associated stressors largely on their own,” said Deborah Williams, Head of Cornwall Counselling Institute.
“This practice-led training enables professionals to develop skills to support peers in their own and related disciplines, to ensure best practice and well-being, and to create a safe space where people can discuss issues without judgement. I hope public sector and business leaders will understand the importance of investing in their staffs’ mental health and professional development and support some of their workers to engage in supervision training, thus benefiting the organisations wider work force.”
How the course works
Developed following consultation with current learners and sector professionals, the 30-credit course is delivered at degree Level 5 and starts on 7th March 2026. It runs part-time over 10 weeks using a blended learning model.
Teaching includes live online evening sessions twice a week, alongside occasional in-person Saturdays at the Institute’s Camborne base.
The programme covers supervision theory and models, alongside practical skills for delivering both individual and group supervision. Learners also develop an understanding of the ethical and legal responsibilities linked to the supervisory role.
“This course has been written to meet the needs of those working in highly stressful and demanding jobs,” Deborah added.
“The Clinical Supervision training will allow professionals to develop the confidence and competence to facilitate supportive group work, encourage self-reflective practice and provide care and advice.”
Assessment and entry requirements
Assessment includes written work on supervision models and legal frameworks, supervised practice in both individual and group settings, and reflective journals linked directly to learners’ professional experience.
The course is open to qualified professionals including counsellors, psychologists, nurses, social workers, teachers, front line workers and registered health and care practitioners. Applicants must be currently working in a professional role, have access to supervisees or peers, and be able to fully engage in online learning.
