Cornwall Council Reminds Residents of the Life-Saving Orange Button Scheme

Published On: 22 January 2024Last Updated: 22 January 2024By

In a crucial reminder to its residents, Cornwall Council is highlighting the Orange Button Scheme, an existing initiative designed to support individuals grappling with mental health challenges or suicidal thoughts. This important scheme serves as a lifeline for many, providing immediate access to trained individuals ready to offer guidance and support.

The Orange Button, symbolised by a distinctive orange badge, is worn by individuals who have completed comprehensive training in mental health first aid or suicide prevention. While these trained volunteers are not professional counsellors, they play a vital role in guiding those in distress towards appropriate services and support mechanisms.

The scheme is particularly focused on ensuring that residents know they can “push the button” when they see someone with the orange badge, signalling a safe and non-judgmental space for discussing mental health and suicide-related issues. The badge wearers have undergone a minimum of three hours of Quality Assured suicide prevention training, making them equipped to engage in supportive conversations and listen without judgment.

In addition to wearing the Orange Button badge, participants can also display the symbol on their email signatures, expanding the scheme’s reach and accessibility. This ensures that help is just a conversation away, whether in person or through digital communication.

To become an Orange Button holder, individuals must complete the required suicide prevention training, with the training manuals available at a nominal cost. The training, funded by Public Health, ensures that volunteers are well-prepared to provide initial support and effectively direct individuals to the necessary services.

The Orange Button Scheme is part of Cornwall Council’s commitment to improving mental health support across the community. By highlighting this initiative, the Council aims to reinforce the network of support available and encourage more residents to participate in the training, enhancing the scheme’s effectiveness.

For those in need of immediate mental health support, the NHS 24/7 mental health response line is available at 0800 038 5300. Additionally, residents interested in becoming a part of the Orange Button Scheme or seeking more information can visit Healthy Cornwall’s training page.
