Solar Panels to Cut Energy Costs: Work Begins at St Ives, Helston, and Liskeard Leisure Centres
Work is now underway to reduce energy costs at three key leisure centres in Cornwall, thanks to significant funding from Sport England.
Solar Panels at St Ives and Helston
St Ives Leisure Centre and Helston Sports Centre are currently undergoing upgrades with the installation of photovoltaic solar panels. These improvements aim to lower energy bills and reduce the environmental impact of the facilities, which are run by GLL under the Better brand on behalf of Cornwall Council.
James Curry, Head of Service for GLL in Cornwall, shared his enthusiasm for the developments: “I’m delighted that work is underway at Helston and St Ives and the news about Liskeard getting capital funding, too, was a great way of ending 2024.”
Additional Upgrades in Liskeard
At Liskeard Leisure Centre, additional solar panels and new pool covers are set to be installed in the coming months. These upgrades are expected to reduce electricity costs at the site by up to 35%.
James continued: “The improvements at Liskeard alone will reduce our electricity costs by up to 35%, a very significant amount at a time when energy costs continue to remain high.”
Liskeard received £175,448 in funding for the upgrades just before Christmas, while over £200,000 was awarded to St Ives and Helston last spring. The projects form part of Sport England’s £60 million Swimming Pool Support Fund, which is backed by government funding and National Lottery contributions.
A Collaborative Effort for Energy Savings
The funding application was submitted by Cornwall Council in collaboration with local swimming pool operators. Councillor Carol Mould, Portfolio Holder for Neighbourhoods at Cornwall Council, commented: “The installation of solar panels will significantly cut energy costs and reduce the carbon footprint of these centres.
“I’m delighted that GLL was successful in securing these grants. We will continue to explore further funding opportunities to support Cornwall’s leisure centres.”
