Supporting Cornwall’s Carers with Discounted Leisure Centre Membership
Carers in Cornwall are set to benefit from discounted membership at Better leisure centres across the region, thanks to a partnership between GLL and Carers UK.
This move aims to encourage carers to engage in physical activities and connect with others, addressing the loneliness and health issues often experienced due to their caring roles.
Discounted Access to Leisure Facilities
From 1 April to 14 May, carers in Cornwall will have the opportunity to enjoy reduced-price memberships at nine Better leisure centres located in Bude, Saltash, Liskeard, Bodmin, St Austell, Newquay, Truro, Helston, and St Ives. This offer is available to individuals who are in receipt of the Carer’s Allowance, enabling them to become members for just £30 per month.
This special membership includes access to a wide range of facilities and activities, including gyms, swimming pools, fitness classes, and health suites. Additionally, for those looking for a more flexible option, there is a £5 offer that allows carers one free activity per month, along with discounts on further bookings.
Supporting Physical and Social Well-being
The partnership between GLL, a charitable social enterprise managing the centres on behalf of Cornwall Council, and Carers UK aligns with the national charity’s activity campaign. Karen Edmond, GLL’s Community Sport Manager, highlights the importance of physical activity for carers, noting that recent research found 67% of the UK’s 5.7 million unpaid carers felt more connected to others through physical activity.
The campaign, Carers UK Active April, not only provides discounted leisure centre access but also includes weekly online physical activity sessions, the chance to participate in a mass walking event, and information on the health benefits of being active.
Additional Support for Carers
Recognising the isolation that can accompany the responsibilities of caring for a loved one, GLL is offering welcome sessions for carers at some of its centres. Details of these sessions, aimed at facilitating socialisation and improving fitness, can be found on the leisure centres’ website pages and social media platforms.
For carers interested in taking advantage of this concessionary membership, more information is available at the Better website, dedicated to explaining the benefits and application process.
This collaboration between GLL and Carers UK represents a valuable support mechanism for Cornwall’s carers, providing them with affordable opportunities to enhance their physical health and social well-being.
