A special screening of the award-winning documentary, “Someone’s Daughter, Someone’s Son,” is set to take place at The Poly in Falmouth on 28 May 2024.

Directed by Lorna Tucker, the film delves deep into the persisting issue of homelessness in the UK, despite its status as the world’s sixth-largest economy.

A Candid Look at Homelessness

The documentary, which runs for 87 minutes, features a poignant exploration of homelessness, weaving personal narratives with hard-hitting facts. Lorna, a filmmaker who has experienced homelessness firsthand, revisits the streets of London where she once lived as a teenage runaway. Through conversations with those currently living without a home and those who have moved on, the film paints a vivid picture of the ongoing crisis.

The screening promises to be an emotional journey, shedding light on the harsh realities faced by over 300,000 people across the nation. The film has been described as both heartbreaking and hopeful, offering a tender reminder that homelessness is not an inevitable aspect of modern society.

Insightful Q&A with John Bird

Following the screening, attendees will have the unique opportunity to engage in a Q&A session with John Bird, the co-founder of The Big Issue magazine. John’s journey from homelessness to becoming a prominent figure in tackling poverty is nothing short of inspiring. Born in a Notting Hill slum and experiencing homelessness from the age of five, his life story is a testament to overcoming adversity through resilience and determination.

John, who was elevated to the peerage as Baron Bird of Notting Hill in 2015, continues to champion the fight against poverty. His approach is focused on dismantling the root causes of poverty through early intervention and prevention.

A Fundraiser for a Noble Cause

The evening is not just about film and discussion—it’s also a fundraiser for Big Issue Frontline, an initiative dedicated to supporting those on the front lines of battling homelessness. By attending, participants will contribute directly to a cause that seeks to make a tangible difference in the lives of many.

This event offers a chance not only to witness a powerful documentary but also to participate in a meaningful dialogue about solutions to one of the most pressing social issues of our time. Don’t miss the chance to be part of this enlightening evening.

Tickets are available now and can be purchased online here or at The Poly, located at 24 Church St, Falmouth TR11 3EG, UK. Doors open at 19:30, with the event running until 22:00. Join us for a night of compelling cinema and conversation in an effort to address and alleviate homelessness.
