The 3Ps Principle: A Guide to Protecting Our Sewers
In a recent public awareness campaign, South West Water has highlighted a critical yet often overlooked aspect of our sewage systems—their capacity and vulnerability. According to the utility company, the majority of sewer pipes running beneath our cities and towns are much narrower than one might assume, measuring a mere 15 centimetres in width. This limited size makes the sewers particularly susceptible to blockages, which can lead to overflows and, consequently, significant environmental harm.
South West Water’s message emphasises the importance of mindful disposal practices, specifically urging the public to adhere to the “3Ps” rule: only paper, pee, and poo should be flushed down toilets. Contrary to common belief, products marketed as “flushable,” such as certain wipes, do not disintegrate as effectively as needed to prevent blockages. The company points out that even these items, along with hygiene products and food scraps, can contribute to the build-up that leads to costly and damaging overflows.
The reminder serves as a call to action for individuals to reconsider their disposal habits and to recognise the impact of their choices on the broader environmental and infrastructural health. By limiting what is flushed to only the 3Ps, the public can play a crucial role in maintaining the efficiency of sewage systems and protecting the environment from unnecessary pollution. South West Water’s campaign underscores the collective responsibility to prevent sewer blockages, safeguard both our waterways and ensure the effectiveness of our wastewater management systems.
