Celebrating 80 Years of Connection: Launceston’s Visually Impaired Club Marks Milestone with Special Gathering
The Launceston Visually Impaired Club, a beacon of community and support for the visually impaired in Cornwall, is set to celebrate a significant milestone.
On Tuesday, 7th May, the club will mark 80 years since its inception in 1944 with a special lunchtime event that promises to be both memorable and moving.
Founded during the turmoil of World War 2 by what is now known as iSightCornwall, the club began as a small gathering inspired by the charity’s successful ‘Tea for the Blind’ socials. It was originally formed to offer social interaction and support to those dealing with sight loss in the area.
Decades of Growth and Community
Over the years, the club has evolved significantly, growing in numbers and transitioning from simple tea meetings to a thriving lunch club. Today, members enjoy regular outings to various local pubs and restaurants, providing not just a meal but a vital social lifeline.
Club member Kath shared her personal experience, stating, “The club is brilliant, it’s great for socialising, I’ve made lots of new friends and I look forward to going every time. It’s been a lifeline for me, I would even say it saved me.” Her words underscore the profound impact such gatherings can have on individuals who might otherwise feel isolated.
A Day of Joy and Music
The upcoming anniversary celebration will not only reflect on the club’s long history but will also feature performances that bridge past traditions with present joy. Attendees will be treated to the sounds of local bellringers and a male voice choir, adding a festive atmosphere to the occasion.
Honouring the Volunteers
The event will also serve as an opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the countless volunteers who have dedicated their time to the club over the decades. These volunteers have been instrumental in enabling members to gather by providing transportation and support, ensuring that even those unable to travel independently can participate in the club’s activities.
Carole, Chief Executive of iSightCornwall, expressed her enthusiasm for the celebration: “It’s so wonderful to be able to celebrate 80 years of Launceston Visually Impaired Club. One of the biggest challenges for people experiencing sight loss can be the isolation or loneliness and thanks to clubs like Launceston, our members are able to enjoy an afternoon out where they can catch up with friends, get support from people who understand and get out and about in their local community.”
A Look Forward
As the Launceston Visually Impaired Club looks forward to its celebration, it remains a vital part of the community, offering not just social interaction but a sense of belonging and mutual support for its members. The 80th anniversary is not just a look back at the club’s rich history, but also a forward glance at its promising future.
