Help Name the Isles of Scilly’s New Freight Vessel: Top Three Names Revealed!

Published On: 10 July 2024Last Updated: 10 July 2024By

The Isles of Scilly Steamship Group is seeking public assistance in naming their new freight vessel, set to replace the Gry Maritha in 2026. This new vessel will play a crucial role in the life of the islands, and the company is looking for a name that embodies the beauty, history, and wildlife of the Isles of Scilly.

The top three shortlisted names are:

– Nor Nor

A name synonymous with Scilly’s ancient history, Nor Nor is a small uninhabited island in the Eastern Isles, joined at low tide to Great Ganilly.

Nor Nor was the name of one of the Steamship Group’s original inter-island launches, carrying passengers and freight between the main five islands during the Second World War. Nor Nor was targeted by enemy fire just off St Martin’s, with several bullets piercing the wheelhouse. Thankfully nobody was injured.

– Teän

Teän was an important part of the Steamship Group’s fleet, serving as an inter-island launch for almost 30 years. Purchased in 1953 to replace an earlier vessel, Gugh, Teän served until the early 1980s.

Nestled between Tresco and St Martin’s, the beautiful uninhabited island of Teän is composed of a series of granite tors – the highest of which, Great Hill, rises more than 40m above sea level. You can easily spot Teän from the north side of St Mary’s, as it is distinctively shaped like a wave.

– Menawethan

Menawethan, one of the 12 uninhabited Eastern Isles, is home to seals and seabirds and a favourite spot for kayakers, divers, and wildlife spotters. A steep sided island, it is known in Cornish as Men an Wedhen, meaning the tree stone.

Cast Your Vote!

The Steamship Group is inviting everyone to cast their vote for the new vessel’s name. Voting is open for two weeks, ending on Wednesday, 24th July. To participate click here.

Make sure to have your say in this important decision and help shape the future of the Isles of Scilly’s maritime heritage!
