Major Funding Boost Unlocks Future for Isles of Scilly Cultural Centre
In a significant development for the Isles of Scilly, the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Good Growth Programme, managed by Cornwall Council and funded by the Government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund, has announced a £3.4m investment in the transformation of the Grade II listed Town Hall on St Mary’s.
This funding secures the future of a new Cultural Centre and Museum, aimed at enriching the local community and boosting the economy.
Full Funding Achieved
The investment completes the necessary £15.72m financial package required to initiate the project, which is expected to enhance the social, economic, and cultural landscape of the Isles. Councillor Louis said, “We’re delighted that the Good Growth programme has been able to complete the funding package that will make this exciting project a reality for the Isles of Scilly.”
Project Details
The project will see the historic Town Hall building in Hugh Town restored and extended to become a hub for arts and cultural activities. This new centre will cater to both residents and tourists, offering facilities for cinema, theatre, live music, and serving as a communal gathering space. This development is particularly targeted at addressing the cultural needs of young people and combating issues like isolation and demographic ageing, which are pressing concerns for the island community.
Environmental and Economic Impact
In alignment with green growth principles, the renovation plans include significant environmental improvements such as the installation of high-efficiency heat pumps, low energy fittings, and solar panels. These upgrades aim not only to preserve the historic character of the Town Hall but also to enhance its sustainability and reduce operational costs.
Furthermore, the project is set to provide local employment opportunities, volunteer positions, and promote skill development, thereby diversifying and strengthening the local economy. It also aims to extend the tourist season by providing attractions during the less busy shoulder months.
Community and Cultural Benefits
Tim, Lead Member for Housing and Corporate Estate at the Council of the Isles of Scilly, expressed his enthusiasm about the project reaching full funding: “This announcement comes at a very exciting stage of the project as it means the development is now fully funded. I’m delighted that the value of the project to the islands has been recognised by the Good Growth Programme and that the Council is getting such support to make this important new facility a reality.”
The project’s completion is aimed for March 2026, promising to create a lasting legacy for the Isles of Scilly that celebrates and preserves its unique culture and heritage.
